Pastor Greg’s 2004 Sabbatical Itinerary
May 3-10 … The Sabbatical begins: Where am I? What am I doing? I’m home, mostly, but not sure what it means to be there or be on sabbatical. This, they tell me, is to be expected.
May 10-20 … Midlife crisis/opportunity: Motorcycle journey around the Pacific Northwest … revisiting mentors, family and friends.
May 21-June 8 … “Homework”: Re-refining the sabbatical days ahead, reading and journaling and taking care of any unfinished sabbatical plans. Short trips and important family time are also planned.
June 9-19 … Jordan joins me on a ten-day trip to Israel. Sans flak jackets—but armed with hope, we will visit Jerusalem and notable centers of peacemaking energy in this symbolic center of our world’s peril and promise.
June 20-July 12 … I travel to the French island of Corsica for a three week choral music “camp”. The music and the cultural immersion is very intense. We’ll live and rehearse in a 16th century convent for the first week, then we’ll make day trips all over the island singing and sharing in the unique culture of Napoleon’s birthplace.
July 12-August 2 … Jan and Alex will join me in southern France as we slowly work our way north through Europe to the “Iona Community” on the Isle of Iona off the northwestern coast of Scotland where we’ll spend the better part of a week connecting with this deeply spiritual and practical Christian community.
August 2-14 … Home/down time: I’ll catch up on whatever parts of the sabbatical has thus far been neglected (sleep, nutrition, e-mail, etc.). I will continue the reading, reflecting and processing that is such critical part of this and every sabbatical experience. (Weston Priory, August 10-12).
August 15-30 … As a family, we’ll return to the northwest to spend up to two weeks of mostly quiet time aboard a rented and retired fishing trawler (I no longer fish and haven’t for nearly 20 years!).
August 30-September 7 … My final sabbatical week will be spent wrapping up all the loose and contained ends of the previous four months. I will be preparing for “re-entry” into the life of Shell Ridge. I will also be “crystallizing” any new visions and learnings that seem appropriate to our life together as a family of faith and a local body of Christ.
